![]() 2010 Detroit Auto Show: Cadillac XTS Platinum ConceptCadillac's top-of-the-line sedan is OnCars pick for Best Concept CarBy Emile Bouret Following on the heels of the gorgeous Converj Concept from last year's North American International Auto Show, Cadillac unveiled another stunning showcar at Detroit. The XTS Platinum Concept represents the latest evolution of Cadillac's "Art & Science" design language, while previewing the production car that will sit atop the Cadillac lineup.
Showcasing the brand's top-of-the-line Platinum range of models, the XTS is powered by a plug-in hybrid system featuring an electric motor matched with the company's excellent 3.6-liter, direct-injected V6. The system has a combined output of 350 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque and can propel the large sedan in pure electric mode in various driving situations at speeds up to 40 mph. While Cadillac officials wouldn't comment on platform architecture, the short "dash-to-axle" length - simply explained as the distance between the leading edge of the door opening and the trailing edge of the front wheel-well - illustrates that the XTS, while AWD, is based on a front-wheel-drive platform - perhaps a lengthened version of GM's Epsilon II architecture, which also underpins the Buick LaCrosse. As significant as the drivetrain and the possible platform underpinning the car might be, here again it's the car's styling that steals the show, with softer forms coexisting with the chiseled surfacing and trademark brand cues that define Cadillac's design vocabulary. From the vertical fin-like taillights and LED headlights, which provide the XTS with a modern and imposing expression, to the beautifully integrated center high-mounted stop lamp that doubles as a spoiler, to the brushed aluminum corporate grille, the flagship sedan features Cadillac DNA through and through. But without question the most impressive aspect of the XTS Platinum is its sumptuous and elegant interior. Inspired by an orchid, the layers of forms and shapes come together to produce a cohesive whole with a sophisticated simplicity that contrasts with the complicated nature of the advanced technology within the cabin. Let's hope that the level of craftsmanship evident in the interior of this showcar makes the transition from concept to production. An artful and contemporary expression of advanced American luxury, Cadillac's team of designers - led by Design Director, Clay Dean - should be commended for their excellent work on the XTS Platinum. It's OnCars pick as the Best Concept from Detroit. Watch the video |
