Leipzig: Another new VW: Golf GTD Debuts

VW keeps pumping innovative new product into the pipeline

By Bill King
Volkswagen introduced yet another new car at the Leipzig Motor Show this weekend. The 2010 Golf GTD follows on the heels of the BlueMotion, the Golf GTI and the Polo, introduced at Geneva earlier this month.

Looking very much like the Golf GTI except for the grille treatment, the GTD will be powered by the high output 168-horsepower version of the 2.0-liter, 16-valve TDI turbo-diesel with eight piezo in-line injectors. In European economy tests, the GTD yielded an impressive 44.4 mpg US combined. CO2 emissions were 139 gm/km (9.38 oz/mi).

The GTD comes standard with a 6-speed manual, the efficient 6-speed DSG automatic being optional.

The GTD goes on sale in Germany in May, but no announcement has yet been made as to possible U.S. distribution. One can only hope this sporty fuel miser will make it across the pond.
