Geneva: 18 Daily Drivers: Real cars for real roads

Cars for the Safeway, the freeway and maybe a twisty byway

By Bill King
The 79th Salon International de L'Automobile is open this week in Geneva, Switzerland. As usual the show features the latest vehicles for the European market with a couple of "world" cars thrown into the eclectic mix - it is a show, after all.

Automakers display their everyday drivers along with their concepts, assuring the public they're on top of current consumer needs while redefining "utilitarian" to fit that market. There's slick stuff in these people movers.

The smoking 2010 Mazdaspeed3's 256 horsepower guarantees the sporty owner a full complement of daily gotchas. That's what direct injecting and turbocharging a 2.3-liter four banger will do for you with a little intelligent tuning by the manufacturer.

The 2010 Fiat 500-C takes a loveable, quirky page from the company's past with a buttoned down version of the little post-WWII 500. Although not up to the performance of such muscular retros as the MINI Cooper and new Beetle, the 500-C is an economical, fun little convertible.
