New Audi S5 and A5 Cabriolets Revealed: Convertibles to roll out this spring

2010 models to intro at Geneva this Spring; hit U.S. dealerships next Fall

By Bill King
Evolved from the Audi A4, the A5 and S5 Coupes were introduced at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show. This week, the company released the first photographs of the convertible versions of that pair - the A5 Cabriolet and the S5 Cabriolet. Both of these soft-top models will be introduced in the U.S. in the Fall of 2009 as 2010 models.

The versatile A5 Cabriolet will employ three powerplants - 2.0-liter TFSI IL4; 3.2-liter FSI V6; and the supercharged 3.0-liter TFSI V6. The S5 also will run the supercharged V6. However, the 354 horsepower, 4.2-liter DOHC V8 powerplant in the S5 Coupe we tested in June is not yet available in the S5 Cabriolet. We can wish.

However, the S5 Cabriolet's blown V6 is rated at 333 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque delivered to all wheels through the S tronic, 7-speed, double-clutch automatic transmission. The new quattroSport rear differential varies the torque between the rear wheels.

As much as we loved the now departed RS4 Cabriolet, we can't wait to get our hands on an S5 Cabriolet.
