New Car Reviews ![]() MAZDASPEED3 Part 1: Design ReviewThis sporty and aggressive hatchback is one of the best looking cars in its classBy Emile Bouret The Mazdaspeed3 is based on the more mainstream Mazda3, a car that has been with us since the 2004 model year. Typically, that kind of longevity would make for a car in desperate need of a makeover, if not an all-new model. But highlighting the successful design of the base car, the Mazdaspeed3 is still arguably among the best looking cars in its class.
The base Mazda3 is available as a four-door sedan and as a five-door hatchback. It is the latter, the good looking five-door, that is the basis for the Mazdaspeed3. Already pretty aggressive looking, the Mazda3's transition to Mazdaspeed3 spec is relatively subtle. There aren't massive, exaggerated fender flares beyond the ones already on the 3, nor do you get the unnecessary multiple coffee can exhaust outlets. Just the one will do, thank you very much. That exhaust outlet is contained within a blacked-out area of the rear bumper which is meant to look like a diffuser, but realistically does nothing more than lighten the rear of the car visually as well as giving it an aggressive look that fits perfectly with this type of car. Above it, we see the least discreet part of the Mazdaspeed3's subtle makeover - the roof spoiler. While larger than the item fitted to the base car, it's still class-appropriate and tastefully done. Lastly, the blacked out taillights complete the aggressive look of the rear of the car nicely. At the front we get more subtlety. The hood has been raised to accommodate the top-mounted intercooler and once again Mazda has shown some restraint in keeping this simple, resisting any temptation to add unnecessary vents or scoops. The air dam is lower than the base car's, suggesting speed, but without exaggeration. At the corners, we see driving lights framed within blacked-out panels that at first appear to be intakes, but are actually just blacked out. Looking at the car's front three-quarter view, we see the clearly defined fender flares that are so nicely integrated into the overall shape of the Mazdaspeed3 - lending the car a sure-footed, wide stance. In profile, the car's design continues to suggest speed - with its tapering roofline, 18-in. wheels, lower rocker panel and air dam, and of course, that rear roof-mounted spoiler completing the subtle yet effective transformation. It's much more tasteful and restrained than some of the other cars in this class, looking more like what BMW's M division might conjure up, and less like an over-the-top SEMA tuner car. The Mazdaspeed3 has collected comparison test wins like Michael Phelps collects gold medals. And while its performance is perhaps the most convincing aspect of its repertoire, its design also contributes greatly to its winning ways.
