The most important cars at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show

2010 Chevrolet Volt
On Sale: Nov. 2010 (optimistically)

The Volt was introduced as a concept car at last January's Detroit show. Clearly it's of number-one importance to GM, whose very survival might precariously ride on the success of the Volt.

The Chevy Volt EREV (Extended Range Electric Vehicle) is the baby of GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz, who years ago saved Chrysler with the Dodge Viper as halo car and symbol for a company boldly charging back. "The Volt thrills me because it's the last thing anyone expected from GM," he says.

The Volt uses the latest lithium-ion battery technology, which can power the stylish sedan for 40 miles, covering the average daily commute. Plug-in at night, so if you only drive 40 miles a day you'll use no gas at all.

A small gasoline engine is only used to charge the battery, after that 40 miles. So we're looking at 50 to 150 miles per gallon, says Chevy - and a possible EPA certification of 100 miles per gallon. Zero to 60 in six seconds, and a sustainable 100 mph.
