The 5 Best Off-Road Vehicles

Here are the rides most likely to keep you from getting stuck in the mud

Land Rover LR3
Base Price: $49,300
Combined Mileage: 14 mpg

In years past, driving a Land Rover on pavement was like using a chainsaw to cut your lawn: It looked macho but better tools were available. Off-pavement, it was a radically different story. There, Land Rovers excelled. Today's Land Rover LR3 is quite good on asphalt and still great off it. This is thanks in part to technology such as "terrain response control," which allows the driver to adjust the vehicle's performance for upcoming obstacles, whether they be wet grass or tall boulders. To help keep the tires on the ground in rough terrain, the LR3 boasts 13 inches of suspension travel in the back and 11 up front. There's also electronically controlled air springs that separately adjust the suspension at each corner to ensure rubber stays in contact with the ground.
