THE ONCARS 5

5 sensible cars for volatile times

Priced around $20,000, these cars stand out as the frugal five

Toyota Matrix AWD
EPA mileage: 22 MPG Combined
Base Price: $20,500

The all-wheel-drive Matrix costs about $21,000, base. It uses a new 2.4-liter engine and is rated 22 mpg. The Matrix is comfortable and roomy, looks terrific, and comes with side airbags and airbag curtains, with stability control optional. The front seat folds flat and offers eight feet from dashboard to tailgate.

A bigger bargain is the 1.8-liter with a 5-speed gearbox that goes for just under $17,000 with freight and gets about 28 mpg; too bad it only comes in two-wheel drive. Toyota engineering and quality for $17,000? A steal. That 1.8-liter engine is a winner in these times.
