This 10th generation Corolla is all new for 2009. The engine is slightly smaller than the others in this group at 1.8 liters and 132 horsepower, but the big upside is 26/35 miles per gallon, tops of the 5. Besides, Toyota's 1.8 is bomb-proof, and higher-tech, with VVT-i (variable valve timing with intelligence), and a timing chain for strength, instead of the usual belt. Electric power steering is new. The standard transmission is a fun 5-speed manual with a fuel-efficient 4-speed automatic optional. Compared to the Nissan Sentra, the wheels are smaller, cruise control and keyless entry aren't standard, and the sound system is less powerful. But safety-wise, it has the same six airbags and ABS, plus a crash-resistant body structure, and, importantly, available electronic stability control. Inside, there's less total volume but more rear legroom. |
